Regardless of the underlying data storage technology, such as Microsoft SQL Storage or Vista, Sitecore represents data as a single, unified XML document. This information architecture includes nodes for every Item in the Sitecore Content structure as well as the Media, Layout, Security and other regions as visible in the first element of the Treecrumb in Content Editor.
Sitecore treats media, such as Flash and Images, as well as the code which makes up a website, such as JavaScript and .NET, differently from the XML content which it processes. The Data section of the Templates representing these resources general contains a Field named Path which references a file in the web server’s document root. If this metadata node in the XML structure is duplicated, the file reference is also duplicated – there will be two nodes pointing to the same file. Some of these files should be versioned in a source code management system for controlled builds from Development through User Acceptance Testing to Production using Sitecore’s Packaging feature.
